Something's rotten in the state of Denmark...

Okay, maybe it's in Lexington, Kentucky but same difference. The state of Kentucky's basketball program is in question, yet again. Doesn't it seem like this happens over and over again. Rumors are circling around the program and thus consuming the thoughts and conversations of every UK basketball fan in the Big Blue Nation.

If Tubby is no longer going to remain the coach, Mitch Barnhart did a good thing by not mentioning it in his statement. A vote of no confidence right now would kill the season right before tournament time.

However, if the plan is to keep Tubby Smith here in Lexington, then Mitch Barnhart's statement should have reflected those sentiments. I truly believe that his statement has brought about more questions surrounding the validity of the rumors floating around.

Speaking of confusion... It's time for UK fans to decide what they truly look for in a coach. Is it victories all around (regular season and tournament), or is it final fours? Sometimes, I believe that UK fans get caught up more in the race to get to the final four rather than the championship itself. What is the basic level of excellence that a coach must be expected to maintain at Kentucky? I honestly think that it needs to be laid out. When a coach takes a job here, why don't the fans just say:

"we expect you to do x by __. We also expect you to repeat x goal by _____. The means to which you achieve this goal we will live with. However, you must do this for us or we will put pressure on you until either you look elsewhere or UK decides to find someone else."

Tubby Smith spoke yesterday of the need for his team to find their identity. Well I think that goes the same for the UK fan base. What are the expectations for the UK basketball coach? Can we all agree upon something?

It is hard for me to hide my objectivity in this matter. I went to UK. I've been a UK fan since I was young. But we have to figure out what we want.

Everyone thought they wanted better recruiting, Tubby brought in the #1 recruiting class... We know what that did.

Is it just final fours and championships?

Let's all get together on this.

As for Tubby, I can't possibly understand how he can go through it every year. He knew what it was like here in Lexington when he became coach, but I think he honestly feels like he's tried everything with this team and with the fans. He's running out of options.

Now I'm not going to be one of those guys who blames the internet (because every team has message boards. They've been around for a while...) But the negativity has been around him since the beginning. So everyone can either decide to fix the relationship here, or it's time for the divorce.

But it would be premature to make the decision now. Mitch Barnhart was right to wait until the end of the season. Can the fans do the same?

John, good to hear from you again.

First of all, it is a tad bit late for Tubby's team to be searching for their long lost identity. That is something that should have been done no later than the first of second week of SEC conference play.

As far as what is to be expected from a new coach, Tubby's overall performance really fits the criteria. Tubby's stats are great stats. His win-loss record is great(SEC and overall). All the accomplishments are there(numerous SEC Championships, SEC Tourney winners, every year a trip to the big tournament). Nobody else in the SEC can compare...yet.

But...and you knew this was coming...the past few years the has definitely been a downward trend across the board. No one can deny this. Last night on the show the guys were questioning what people cared more about, season record or Final Fours. There were mixed results. I feel it is more important to boost the W-L record. In time, if you manage your regular season record and conference performance, the Final Fours will fall in place. Teams that win consistently all season typically do well in the NCAA Tourney.

The problem with Tubby and his teams is that for the past several years there has been no Final Fours despite great regular seasons. And as of the past two years there have been no great regular seasons and early exits from the tournament.

As far as the recruiting goes, Tubby had his #1 class, but did he do the legwork on his recruiting? Apparently he didn't really get to know his recruits all that well. I know that must be an extremely difficult task, but it is necessary. Morris to use UK as a stepping stone to the NBA? Obvious. Rondo not a good fit? Anyone that shoots as poorly as he did and still averaged big numbers for Oak Hill definitely liked to have the ball too much. Crawford wanting to return home five minutes into his college career? Michigan and Michigan St. didn't want him. Kentucky was third choice.(that was a stab in the dark-may be not true-but I am trying here). Recruiting class this year may be my favorite yet.

Get rid of Tubby? No, not this year. I definitely think there will be a turnaround after this season. Maybe some personnel changes. I can tell a difference in the physical abilities of the team since Holsopple(sp?) joined the staff. Maybe can Hobbs and Hanson be removed? Look for motivators to add to his bench. The talent is there, maybe not the brains, but there is talent. Next year will be his last chance in my books.

Well, I watch the game and I see the same mistakes as the first of the year. Horrible turnovers, players standing around, pounding the ball at the top of the key. In October, November and December that is fine. Looking for your identity at that time and your playmakers. Fine. Not in Febuary and now March. That can't happen. I've always liked Tub but I believe someone has to go. 1 year is one thing, 2 years in a row is another. I've never liked Hobbs and thought he was a bad hire. Let him be the fall guy if Tubby doesn't want to be. And after watching and seeing how bad we can play, we could still beat Florida. That might give us some motivation throughout the tourney.

Lets go!

Hey guys....I love the show. I just wanted to post some corrections to a STAT that you guys have been using in comparison to the coaches. According to http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/Statistics/coaches.html Rick Pitino winning percentage 81% which is much better than Tubby's. I just thought I would point it out as I got called out on it today myself. Good luck to you guys I will be listening this afternoon!!!!
